MY BIO & CREDENTIALS
Neva started her writing career through a high school program with her hometown’s newspaper. After graduating from the University of Virginia with a degree in Foreign Affairs, Neva worked at a law, mental health, and public policy think tank in Charlottesville.
When she returned to her hometown, she became an advertising editor and op-ed columnist for another small-town newspaper. Neva also enjoyed a brief stint as a movie critic for a local radio station.
After a decade of employment with two major telecom companies, Neva entered public relations and marketing. As a project manager with a corporate agency, she served clients in the following sectors: banking, insurance, law, long-term care, retail, real estate, manufacturing, higher education, municipal public works, public housing and redevelopment, and public libraries.
Neva left the agency to serve as the copywriter for a leading single-source supplier for spa professionals worldwide. Then she moved into the nonprofit world.
Briefly, she assumed the role of executive director and marketing director for a nonprofit consortium of agencies before accepting a position as director of public relations for an area agency on aging. During her time with this nonprofit organization, she received a Compass Rose Award for Communicating with Creativity. She also completed her Master of Arts in Professional Writing at Chatham University and joined a local chapter of Toastmasters International, winning several public speaking competitions.
When she left the area agency on aging, Neva accepted a position as the education coordinator for an artisan network. During that time, she traveled across a 19-county region training creatives to market and price their work. Two years later, she entered the field of higher education.
Neva has been a career development professional at a small liberal arts college for nearly a decade. Her department is part of an economic development and strategic initiatives office, where she works with team members focused on entrepreneurship, community development, public health, and technology.
As the director of the college’s career services, Neva manages the daily operations and budgets for the department. She has written and received several grants related to experiential learning and partners with technology start-up companies to provide paid internships for STEM students. She advises students about professionalism and career choices.
Neva serves on the college’s crisis communication team, strategic planning and implementation committee, a regional workforce development board, and a regional career council. She produces a career podcast and is co-founder of a career attire closet for students in need. Neva has served on the marketing committee for a state career services organization, creating the conference logo and designing and editing the newsletter.
During her telecom career, Neva won several awards for diversity in action and community achievement. She founded a women-working-in-telecom affinity group and served as its first president. The long-time communications chair for a local Main Street program, Neva was its webmaster. Assisting with her town's annual festival, she provided community and media outreach to market the event. She helped build her town’s Kiwanis Club and served as its first secretary and webmaster. In 2019 she received an outstanding alumni award from the local Chamber of Commerce’s leadership development program.
Neva is a member of the American Marketing Association.
Neva is a daydreamer and a storyteller. More than 60 of her short stories and poems appear in literary journals, online magazines, and anthologies. The author of several novels, she has also published a picture book for children. Learn more about her creative writing publications.
When she’s not working, Neva enjoys reading, kayaking, hiking, and photography. She lives in the mountains of southwestern Virginia with her husband and their dogs.
